Great Yarmouth Corporation Transport

Bowls Team

By Bill Ditcham

I recently looked at the Great Yarmouth Corporation Transport section on Our Great Yarmouth website and came across a mall entry by a MickLake stating that he was unable to get a photo of his granddad JackLake who served on the buses. I have an article which I cut out of the Great Yarmouth Mercury a year or two ago, copy attached, which has a photo of JackLake in it.

I can name the majority of the men in the photo as follows:

Top row left to right: Not known, Georgie Palmer, Charlie Bear, Kenny Rice, Jack Lake, Freddie Minter, Henry Gadson, Billy Pitts, Karl Henshaw, Sid Skoyles, not known.

Front row left to right: Fred Thompson, Paaddy Shepherd, Frank Hall, Reggie Gilbert, Not known.

I was on the buses from 1963 until 1972.

Hello Billy, I worked with you at GYCT - I recall we both commenced ONC Business Studies courses at different colleges in 1970/72. The mystery 'not known' standing far right in the back row next to Sid Skoyles could be Bill Grimmer. Jack Lake taught me to drive in 1968. Best wishes, Duncan

But on second thoughts maybe it's Russell Cowper and not Bill Grimmer?

Hi Billy I have a copy of the photo in an edition of the Mercury dated 6th Dec 1996.  The tall man in the grey suit is an ex Senior Inspector who lived on Middleton Road.  It’s not Carl Henshaw as he was my uncle.  The man at the end is Bill Grimmer and the man in front of Sid Skoyles is Teddy Adams, brother of Johnny Adams.

Hi Bill, You will probably have known my dad, John Hanchett, who was Manager, and played for the bowls team for some years I believe.
