The Waterways 1954

As promised, a couple of pics from 1954 walking along the front and Regent Road. Note the suit and tie and hat and gloves. We would never go to the beach in Oz dressed like that. We really dressed 'proper' in those days.

As the summer season had not started yet, I went to find a job. I saw an ad on the Deli stall in the market place for an assistant, so asked about it. I was asked how much I wanted per week. (A surprise as I had been earning two pounds and five shillings at the YMCA in Leeds. So I said, 'three pounds will do' - I got the job. It was selling chickens, bacon, ham other goods. The chap asked if I had ever 'dressed a chicken'. I had no idea what he was talking about but said yes anyway. He gave me a bucket and a dead chicken and told me to 'dress' it. I then realised that he meant take the guts out. So for the first, and not the last time in my life, I prepared a chicken for sale. I enjoyed this job, calling out to the shoppers how good the stuff was on the stall. I also had conversations with the people who sold the fruit and veg across the way.

Eric introduced me to cockles, mussels and whelks and mushy peas and lovely chips in the market place. When we went back in 1984, that was the first place we visited. It was a bit different, but still enjoyable.

Next time I will post some older photos taken in Great Yarmouth.

Just to say the last two photos were taken in the Water Ways North Drive not the Yacht Pond as stated. The Yacht Pond was next to the Pleasure Beach Nelson Gardens South Beach Parade.

Thanks for correcting me. Eric was not here when I did that, or he would have corrected me too. Ta,

Hi Doris nice to see your photos I used to shop on the market for my mum so I am sure I must have used the stall you worked on. I always make for the chips and shellfish stalls when I visit Yarmouth as well.

Thanks for the nice comments. I have some more photos but I have to find the time to sort them out. We keep busy here in Oz. By the way, Lind Grimmer...you haven't contacted me yet. How's about an email. Would love to hear from you. I am not on Facebook any more. Didn't like it. Cheers Doris

Can any one remember Blake’s stall selling jot and chitterings?  There was another stall that also sold jot and chitterings.
