Postcard commemortating Nelson's Centenary

Gt Yarmouth Museums

By John Layton

This is a postcard which was issued to commemorate the centenary of the death of Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.  The flags around the edge of the card are those that Nelson ordered to be flown at the Battle, spelling out his now famous message:  England expects that every man will do his duty.

There has been a local connection with the hero ever since, as shown by the Monument on South Denes.  He once stayed at what is now the Wrestlers Public House on the Market Place.

Note the wording at the top of the card; 'County Borough of Great Yarmouth'.  The town was granted, by royal permission, the title of County Borough, which was one step up from the normal Borough status.
