The Fisherman's hospital is situated on the Market Square in Great Yarmouth, the photograph shows building work taking place in the 1950s.

The figure in the cupola on the roof is Saint Peter, the patron saint of fishermen, and the 'fisher of souls'.

The Corporation of Great Yarmouth founded the hospital in 1702. It was set up as Almshouses for 'decayed' fishermen: providing housing for twenty fishermen and their wives aged sixty and over who could no longer provide for themselves.

Now it has been converted into private residences.

My mother's family is a Great Yarmouth family . In researching my ancestors I have found a couple of connections to the Fisherman's Hospital. Are there records I could check out. John Balls was there on 1861 census aged 87. He died later that year . Hilton Mann 14 Church Plain in 1841 He died there 1843 aged about 72 . His wife was Martha. Thanks Maggie

My family are from the Thurne/Flegg area of Norfolk - it seems my third great grandfather Robert George died in this hospital sometime around 13th Nov 1885.
