The Regal Theatre, which stood on the corner of what is now the Market Gates Precinct, opposite British Home Stores, was primarily built as a Theatre, but later became one of the town's cinemas.
Part of the contract that allowed films to be shown stipulated that there must be at least one live show put on every year, or the theatre would close.
The Regal has played host to many stars over the years, including Derek Roy and Peter Brough (Educating Archie). Even the folk group The Spinners were a regular sight in the '70's.
The local Amateur Dramatic Group GYAODS held their pantomimes there every Christmas until the building was demolished to make way for the shopping precinct.
