Before the advent of package holidays

By Martin Keable

The artificial palms were products of the decades after the second world war and before many visitors had sampled the real thing via a package holiday! The seats outside the Britannia Pier have always provided a sheltered area for taking the sun and watching the world go by. Regent Street, a mecca for shop browsers of all generations, links the town with the area of Marine Parade outside of the pier. Generations of holiday makers have sat here putting the world to rights and resting their weary feet at the same time. This area, the centre of the traditional seaside seafront, has been much altered through the Intergreat project and is more open and spacious.
