Profile of Maureen Woods: Shop Assistant in the Lighting Department at Palmers Department Store, Great Yarmouth

Maureen Woods began work in the hairdressing salon at Palmers in 1976 where she worked until 1986. She returned to the store in 1996 and has been working there for the past 11 years in the furniture then the lighting department.

A typical working day begins with Maureen and her colleagues looking at their notes, and deciding what has to be done: chasing up orders, getting orders out, serving, restacking shelves, moving products about and putting lights up.

She says: "The thing I really enjoy about my job is selling products... It's nice to talk to the customer and get to know them". She says Palmers is a "nice store, it's like being part of a family...I enjoy my job".

Iworked at Palmers 1961 to 1964 in the TV & Electrical department with Mr Les Drury. I opened the Musical Department for them which was a great success as it was the era of the Beatles, Stones , etc. This had a big support from all the musicians and budding local groups as at this time there were many pit orchestras in the theaters and summer shows. Being a musician myself it was well supported but I believe when left to move to Kings Lynn the department folded.

I remember the grotto in there at Christmas time also the lift with a lift attendant working it.  There were counters with assistants working behind them.

I don't believe you have a proof reader or the spelling mistakes would be corrected.  However I still hope to visit shortly, being a fan of Palmers BSE for many years.

Had the great pleasure of meeting Maurice Joel on a recent holiday. My Great Grandad was Father Christmas in What was then Arnold's in the 60's. I loved the lifts!

I am Leslie Drury's daughter.  Les worked in the electrical dept at Palmer.  Dad passed away in 1985 but I know he had fond memories of Palmers.
