A very special Roller Skating Memory

By Brian Colclough

The photograph below recalls when The National Skating Association of Great Britain celebrated its Centenary in 1979 with an Ice Gala at Wembley. All living British former World Champions, Ice and Roller were invited and each received a specially-struck Centenary medal. Her Majesty The Queen, the NSA's Patron, accompanied by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh made the presentations.

Brian and Pat recall the massive excitement they felt on this occasion and were overwhelmed by the generosity of Yarmouth Roller Skating Club members who made the journey to Wembley in support. It was wonderful to know they felt as personally involved as we did.

This picture is included as a dedication to our coach Jocelyn Taylor and her late husband Richard Moore. Her unswerving confidence, endless hours of dedication, coupled with the massive support of Richard made this unique experience possible.

I used to belong to the roller skating club at the Winter Gardens in the late 50s early 60s, Brian taught me to roller dance.  My auntie used to work behind the snack bar.  How nice to see this photo.

This lovely photograph of The Queen will maintain a lasting historical link with Great Yarmouth's Roller Skating Enthusiasts.
