A Modern Beach Scene

Postcard showing the beach relatively recently

By John Layton

The beach has always been a great attraction for young and old alike, and changes with the times.

Whereas in the 19th century you would have seen bathing machines, these disappeared to make way for the throngs of holidaymakers that used the beach in the 20th century.

Now the Marram Grass has taken hold over much of the beachfront, but there are still some open areas where pop concerts are held during the season.

This postcard shows a late-20th century view of the beach, with a small-time children's attraction, which has usurped the old bathing machines and beach huts.

I think there are a few changes since then, like the pier etc. But we still have that beautiful sand which goes for miles and is a pleasure to walk on.
