The Boating Lakes

Pictures of the Boating Lakes in the 1950's

By John Layton

There were, at one time, two boating lakes on the 'Golden Mile'.

The Northern one, next to the Waterways, is still going strong, probably because of its proximity to the Waterways, which itself has now faded into the background.

The Southern one, which was adjacent to the Pleasure Beach, has long since vanished into history, becoming part of the Log Flume ride.

I remember the Waterways all lit up on a night, with lovely little playing cards dotted in amongst the bushes and flowers, even under the little bridges that the long boats used to go through. Im sure they were from 'Alice in Wonderland'.

My father had deck chair site near north boating lake, good days growing up on the beach in the 50s an 60s.

My grandad just do all the boats for the waterways, maintain and paint them,Herbert brown.
